While reading Esperanza Rising, we discussed many things. For example, we discussed the rich language, characteristics of people, how Esperanza changed, and many more things. One thing we took a lot of time to discuss was the names of the chapters. At first we thought that the chapters were named after a certain fruit depending on how it tasted. The first chapter was called Grapes. We thought it was called this because grapes are sour and also sweet, and the chapter was part good, part bad. Another chapter was called Onions. This was a sad chapter and sometimes onions make you cry. Later on in the story, we figured out that the chapters were named after the seasons when they grow certain crops. Also, we wondered if Miguel was a good or bad character. For example, Miguel seemed like a kind person when he taught Esperanza how to sweep. He didn't seem nice when he stole Esperanza's savings, but later on we found out it was for a good reason. Now we know that Miguel is a good person. |
