Reading Response

Taking Notes:

  • Use index cards or sticky notes.
  • Note comments you have (I wonder, I think, I feel, I didn’t like, I like, I predict, etc.).
  • Note questions you have.
  • You do not have to write in complete sentences (the shorter the better!).
  • Write down character names if you keep forgetting.
  • Write down the page number.

Writing the response in school:

For now you need to accomplish the following three items:

1.    Focus on one comment or question.

2.   Write at least 3-5 complete sentences.

3.   Use detail and examples to explain your ideas.

Example:

I wonder if it was a good idea for the boy to write letters to his friends back at the end of the world. I know he must miss them, but wouldn’t Mr. Shimmer be able to track him down. After all, wasn’t it the boy who had originally discovered the wonderful place at the end of the world? Maybe Mr. Shimmer would want to expand to another place, like the boy’s new home at the top of the world. So, I think the boy should find another way to communicate with his friends that Mr. Shimmer won’t be able to track.
