Welcome to Mr. Frost’s

Fourth-Grade Class!

I

have been looking forward to meeting you all summer. I can’t wait to find out more about you and what you did over your adventurous vacation! For example, I’m sure you read some good books during that time. I read, of course, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, as well as The Princess Academy, The Liberation of Gabriel King, and many other books I hope to read in class.

Other parts of my summer were spent with my son, Jackson (who just turned two) and my wife. We went to the beach a lot and kayaked. In addition, I spent much of the summer building a fence and stone wall as well as working on my two middle-grade novels and two picture books. (Did you know that I’m a writer hoping to be published?)

I bet you are probably wondering what fourth grade will be like. Well, here’s a quick idea. Mr. Dunn and I have been working on a project this summer that we hope will make what you learn more interesting and memorable. In fact, every one of you will be responsible for helping it become this way. On the very first day, you will notice the room is not what you expect. There’s a reason for that, but you have to wait and see.

Then as the days and weeks move along, you (the students) will be helping guide where we go. You will be making important decisions about how the classroom is run and how we learn many topics and answer many questions. You will decide how creative and fun the journeys we take will be. cover

Some of the topics we will include:

  • United States geography and immigration

  • plants, rocks, and electricity

  • addition, subtraction, data, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and geometry

In addition, we will read many genres, like mysteries, memoirs, historical fiction, nonfiction essays, journals, and magazines. We will also be writing in many of these forms and working on paragraphs, beginnings and endings, rich language, editing, and details, details, details. You will be amazed by what you create!

Even though this year is going to be a lot of hard work, it will also be one of your most memorable years. I’ll expect you to put in your best effort. It is very important that all work is completed and that you participate in all class activities because we have a lot to learn in one year. In addition, I expect my class to be respectful to everyone and to listen when someone is speaking. Every person has something to offer.

I have a great feeling about this year’s class and I expect it will be one of the best classes ever! Enjoy the rest of the summer! See you soon!

Writing

For writing, we have been doing our letters to our fifth-grade teachers. Mostly everyone is done. We have also been working on our Maniac Magee essay. For extra credit, some people have been working a fantasy, mystery, or realistic fiction story.

Math

In math, we had geometry quizzes.  We also had a few practices for MCAS. MCAS was Monday May 21 and Tuesday May 22.  We have been learning fractions and decimals. We have also been learning area, volume, and perimeter.

Daybreak

On the tidal mud, just before sunset,

dozens of starfishes

were creeping. It was as though the mud were a sky

and enormous, imperfect stars

moved across it as slowly

as the actual stars cross heaven.

All at once they stopped,

and as if they had simply

increased their receptivity

to gravity they sank down

into the mud; they faded down

into it and lay still; and by the time

pink of sunset broke across them

they were invisible

as the true stars at daybreak.

Social Studies

In social studies, we have been doing Survivor. In Survivor, we have been doing some challenges before the year is over. Some of the challenges are the clothes plan and the shelter plan. The Santos tribe won the clothes plan and the Gantosean tribe won the water plan. No one know who will win the shelter plan.

Science

In science, we took an electricity test. We also made light bulbs light up by a battery and mini light bulbs and a few wires. We made series and parallel circuits. We also did a magnet test and electricity test. For static, we rubbed balloons with different materials.

Read-Aloud

In read-aloud, we have been reading Mr. Frost’s  book, Swallowed. It is about two boys, Mark and Sammy. They try to be famous by going in the sewers. Some parts are scary like when they ran into the bully, Billy, at the manhole. Also, it’s creepy when Billy has the dreams about his grandmother, sister, and dad. But we all think it’s good.

Something Funny

When we were playing Silent Ball, Tommy stood up and got hit in the head with a squishy apple ball. Also, Mr. Frost kicked water at us while he was in the dunk tank. Then he threw his wig at some of the kids on the hill. Tommy and Seth ran around wearing it.

Exciting and Extraordinary

During Field Day, Tommy and Trevor dressed up as Harry Potter and Mr. Frost dressed up as Dumbledore. Mr. Frost also went in the dunk tank and got sunk a lot. For the face painting, some girls got pink faces with yellow noses.

Specialist News

Gym

In gym, we have been playing a fun game from Harry Potter called Quidditch. There are four positions. There are the beaters, seekers, goalies, and everyone else tries to score on the goalies. Before Quidditch, we played Capture the Lacrosse Ball. You try to get the balls in your net or get everyone out to win.

Music

In music, we have been working on class compositions and group compositions. We have also worked on melody. Every time we get 24 points, we get a music party. In addition, we are making class recordings. We can listen to them on Mr. Herosy’s music class website. They sound really cool.

Library

In library, we are doing many things. Most of all we have just been talking about books. But since school is almost over, we had to return all of our books. One day, we had a substitute and watched The Birth of the Constitution with Charlie Brown. It all took place in Philadelphia. And since it was a long time ago, Charlie Brown was inventing all kinds of sports like kickball, baseball, and, of course, basketball. That is what we have been doing in library.

Letter from Mr. Frost

We all can’t believe how quick this year went by. The cool weather didn’t help; it still felt like April. But more than anything, the year ended too fast because I had such an amazing class of wonderful students. I will never forget you and I hope you will continue to come back and visit me. Thank you.

I also want to thank the parents, who have been so supportive and encouraging. Your children would not be the way they are without you. And therefore our entire class would not have been so special. Thank you.

As for this summer (and I’ve already noticed a lot of you doing this), make sure you continue visiting my website. I’d love to see what you are reading and to share my thoughts on the many books I plan to read. Also, keep writing. So far, in three days, you have doubled the length of the Live Writing story. Who knows what twists and turns it will take. In addition to the website, feel free to e-mail me or to even send letters to me here at school (you can even send stories you’ve written). I’ll be here quite often.

Of course, I will be making time for writing my new book, kayaking, and spending time with my family. I hope you will also all have fun. But remember to be safe.

Take care and I look forward to seeing you in the fall. Thank you.

Your teacher, Mr. Frost
